Compound Tenses

Compound tenses are formed with the verb "Haber" in various tenses + the Past Participle.

The Past participle is formed through the next steps:

1.- Eliminate the –ar, -ir or –er ending of the verb.

2.- If the verb ends in –ar replace it with –ado.
     If ends with –er or –ir, replace it with -ido.
If it is an irregular verb replace with –to, -so or  -cho.


Present Perfect Indicative Verb "haber" in Present Indicative
-Ar, -Er or-Ir ending verbs
Yo he + Past Participle
El /Ella/ Usted ha
Nosotros(as) hemos
Vosotros(as) habéis
Ustedes / Ellos / Ellas han


Past Perfect Indicative -Ar, -Er or-Ir ending verbs
Yo había + Past Participle
El /Ella/ Usted había
Nosotros(as) habíamos
Vosotros(as) habíais
Ustedes/ Ellos/ Ellas habían

Yo hube + Past Participle
El /Ella/ Usted hubo
Nosotros(as) hubimos

        The imperative mood is formed following different rules for each person. Note that the following pattern shows the whole verb and that in order to make the endings clear, they have been underlined.

Imperative  -ar ending verbs -er ending verbs -ir ending verbs
(bailar – to dance) (comer – to eat) (vivir– to live)
Yo ------
baila,( no bailes) come, (no comas) vive, (no vivas)
El / Ella / Usted baile coma viva
Nosotros(as) bailemos comamos vivamos
Vosotros(as) bailad, (no baileis) comed, (no comáis) vivid, (no viváis)
Ustedes/ Ellos/ Ellas bailen coman vivan
